How Is a Ring Engraved?

There are several ways to engrave a ring, and at Wedstones, the technique we use depends on the design, the level of detail involved and the width of the ring itself.

For text engraving, such as initials, a significant date or a message inside a wedding or engagement ring, we often use laser engraving. Laser engraving creates a particularly precise, clean-cut finish which is why sometimes this is our recommended engraving method. 

For more intricate and bespoke designs, hand engraving is usually our preferred method. This could include detailed floral designs, scenery, meaningful symbols or other artwork created specifically for you. By engraving into the metal at different depths, a skilled hand engraver can introduce greater depth, texture and give the engraving more of a 3D effect. Hand engraving also has the advantage of retaining its detail for longer even with light re-polishing but we will always advise accordingly on every engraving. 

Due to the craftsmanship and time involved, bespoke hand engraving is more of an investment - but one that we believe is absolutely worth it for many engraved designs.

For patterned rings, we normally use diamond-cut engraving, depending on the particular design and finish we're looking to achieve.

Machine engraving is another technique available within the jewellery industry, but it's one we very rarely use at Wedstones. We find that it doesn't generally provide the same clean and refined finish that can be achieved with laser or hand engraving.

Ultimately, there isn't one engraving technique that's best for every ring. We'll consider the width and style of the band, the complexity of your chosen design and the finish you'd like to achieve before recommending the most suitable option.
